I don't know if reading the news today about one-year Kohen Wiley was a wise decision, but I do know it hasn't left my mind. And if you aren't familiar yet with this baby's name or the horrific circumstances of his death, please look it up. I'm tired, and I don't want to summarize it for you. Kohen is worthy of a few seconds of your screen time and effort.
After watching news footage of the protesting at the Senatobia, MS, Walmart, I can assure everyone that racism is alive and well and has bells on. Here are some ~~~definitely unracist~~~ comments left on that footage:
"I can smell this video."
"Who opened the cages?"
"Must be the EBT line!"
"Start passing out job applications and the crowd will disperse immediately."
"They're chimping out like never before these days."
"Y'all still haven't learned to stop chimping out."
"The kid was actually saved from a life of crime and imprisonment."
[...And here comes the best example that ~~~racism doesn't exist~~~...]
"Well, at least I know that's one of 'em that won't...grow up to breed."
Black babies deserve to be safe.
They deserve to grow up.
Again, I'm tired. I'm UU and absolutely believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person, but it is extremely hard to say that I wouldn't want to see the officer's head on a spike. Now.
And where is the UUA?? Silent — again. The Black community sees and takes notes. This is an unbearable loss, unbearable and immeasurable.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
